Golden globetrotters celebrate 50 years of marriage

JET-setters Glenys and Donald Baguley will be celebrating their golden wedding with not one but two trips away.

The couple from Thelwall will head out to Sorrento, Italy later this month to mark 50 years of marriage, which they celebrate this Saturday.

Next year they will follow up their celebrations with a cruise around the Caribbean to top the years of sightseeing across the globe that the pair have shared throughout their married life.

Donald, aged 71, and 73-year-old Glenys met in far more subdued circumstances though.

“The very first time we met was at the Ritz at the Saturday morning pictures when we were 10. But we only met up and started courting when I came out of the Army when I was 20,” said Donald.

Love blossomed and a year later the couple married at Thelwall Independent Methodist Church.

Donald went on to work at Chadwicks Paper Mill while Glenys worked at the Employment Exchange and the pair certainly made the most of their holidays travelling across Europe, America, Canada and even as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.

But despite their jet-setting ways the couple shared a wedding celebration with son Leslie and their family including four grandchildren when they renewed their wedding vows earlier this year at Ripon Cathedral in Yorkshire.

And their secret to a happy marriage, apart from lots of travelling?

“Stick together through thick and thin, don’t worry about the arguments, don’t get into debt because that’s the biggest cause of arguments. If you can’t afford it, don’t get it,” added Donald.
