A MAN escaped a fire in his flat after his smoke alarms went off, alerting him to the blaze on Friday.

The fire, at a flat on Helsby Street in Howley, began in the lounge and probably would have spread were it not for the fact that internal doors were closed, a Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.

The man living at the flat was in the bedroom when the blaze started, and managed to escape his flat before firefighters arrived.

It is not clear what started the fire at 4.30pm and an investigation is ongoing.

The Fire Emergency Support Service Red Cross was called due to the severity of the fire.
