A CYCLIST who was knocked off his bike near where a mum-of-three was killed in September is insisting the council install proper cycle lanes.

Raymond Wormald was lucky not to be seriously hurt when his bike was hit by a driver turning left onto Kingsway South from Grange Avenue in Latchford last Wednesday.

Eighteen months ago he was almost hit in the same spot, and now he wants Warrington Borough Council to put down cycle lanes on the whole road.

“They want people to get out of their cars and save the planet but when there’s not enough bike lanes it’s dangerous,” said Raymond, from Henshall Avenue.

“Is it going to take someone else to get killed?” he asked.

In September, Sharon Corless, a 43-year-old, was killed on Kingsway North when her bike was in a collision with a Range Rover Sport.

Stephen Hunter, strategic transportation manager at the council, said: “A local safety scheme was implemented at the Kingsway roundabout four years ago. High friction surface dressings and road narrowings aimed at improving safety at this location were both introduced.

“The council has recently received a commitment of financial contribution from a developer in the area. These funds will improve provision for cyclists travelling along Farrell Street and Kingsway in Latchford. “Once work on the development begins the funds will be released to us and improvements will be quickly introduced."
