THE mother of a mountaineer who climbed Mount Everest has retraced his steps to Nepal.

Mavis Peacock, aged 66, from Stocks Lane, Penketh, and her friend, 66-year-old Margaret Owen, flew to the southern Asian country’s capital, Kathmandu to trek miles across the Himalayan terrain.

Mrs Peacock said: “My son, Stuart, is a professional mountaineer and I said to him that I would like to see where he has climbed so he arranged for Margaret and I to go trekking in Nepal and take a small plane over Everest.

“There was just the two of us and two sherpas – our guide and a porter – who have both been to Everest with Stuart.”

The two women trekked for up to six hours a day on their 10-day adventure last month.

Margaret added: “We have both lost our husbands and so we decided to start holidaying together.

“We’ve been to China, India, Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand.”
