Remembering chess champ Charles Warburton

THE centenary anniversary of the birth of Warrington’s greatest chess player takes place next month and Penketh Chess Club is tracing people who knew him.

The chess club is commemorating the birth of the late Charles Warburton – who died at the age of 81 in 1989 – at a special event on December 8, at Penketh Tavern.

Mr Warburton, who was the top chess player in the town for almost half a century, founded the Warrington Chess League, wrote My Chess Adventures and was the holder of many chess offices both locally and nationally.

Members of Penketh Chess Club are inviting anyone who knew Mr Warburton or is interested in his contribution to chess in the area to attend the commemoration evening next month, which will be attended by members of his family, to reminisce about the legend.

Attendees are asked to bring along any memorabilia they may have of Mr Warburton from trophies to score sheets.
