WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones headed to the river banks on Friday to see the biggest salmon of the year caught and recorded.
She joined representatives of the Environment Agency at Woolston Weir where they operate a fish trap to record the fish moving along the Mersey.
Mrs Jones said: “It is fantastic to see salmon back in the Mersey. I understand that the trap has shown that eels and sea trout are also active in the river.
“The Environment Agency are doing tremendous work improving the quality of water in the Mersey and helping fish to swim up into the tributaries to spawn. “
