Cash plan to solve alcohol problem

THE Government is to give Warrington a cash boost in an attempt to tackle the problems caused by drinking.

NHS Warrington, as one of the 20 worst areas in the UK, will take a share of £3m.

The money will be spent on gathering detailed statistics and publishing advice.

There will also be a further £2.7m to establish alcohol managers to develop treatment and £1m will fund a new Alcohol Learning Centre.

Importantly, it will increase access to specialist treatment. Currently there is, on average, one place for every 18 people, who show signs of alcohol dependence.

Announcing the plans, Dawn Primarolo, the public health minister, said: “More than a quarter of adults in England drink above Government guidelines and around 15,000 people die because of alcohol every year.

“We clearly have a serious problem that needs urgent attention.

“For every pound spent on alcohol intervention, five pounds are saved by the public purse – so this is money well spent,” she added.

The north west is the worst region in the country for the number of hospital admissions related to alcohol, and in Warrington this number is particularly high for females.

Rhona Bradley, the chief executive of Addiction Dependency Solutions, said: “We welcome the Government’s decision to give money to this much needed area and it will hopefully allow agencies like ADS to build on the good work that is already being done in Warrington.”

ADS has a centre on Museum Street. If you need help with addiction call the centre on 428465.

This June Alan Johnson, Health Minister, announced that £34m would be made available for improvements in alcohol services. The money spent here is part of that package.

NHS Warrington is to launch a new campaign next month, which will attempt to reduce the levels of drinking among women.

The campaign will focus on the effects alcohol has on weight and appearance, as well as health.

A massive cash injection into this problem, that I hope will be used wisely. Maybe we as a nation need to go back a little further than teenagers and make children socially acceptable in this country on the whole. In many other european countries children are welcomed with open arms at social events and not made to feel they are in the way, and a nuicance to society. This will teach children that alcohol is socially acceptable under the right conditions and in the correct manner, and they do not have to go on the streets abusing it. Also teenagers cannot see what lies ahead of them in the future regarding health implications. Make this a campaign too, the affect that the alcohol has on them here and now, today. The fact that we in Warrington allow this to happen on our streets is shameless and people should do as much as they can to make it socially unacceptable on the streets. The advertising/marketin
g of alcohol and the cheapness at which it is sold also needs to be adressed and not glamourised in anyway. Yes the cash injection to help the ones with a problem is great but there are many more issues to address alongside this in order for it to be worthwile.

So, if divided equally that would be only £150k each, not exactly massive
