Mental patient who burgled homes is detained

A MENTAL health patient who burgled two homes in Orford has been detained in hospital to receive treatment for his personality disorders.

Warrington Crown Court heard on Friday how Julian Brown, aged 36, waited outside a house on Ireland Street on June 5 this year.

Joanne Parsons, prosecuting, said Brown entered the house around 12.30pm through an unlocked conservatory door.

He stole a camera from a kitchen but heard a dog barking and climbed over a fence into the garden next door.

He then smashed a kitchen window with a brick before taking £50 and 30 euros from a purse.

A neighbour called the police and Brown was arrested nearby with the camera and money.

Joanne Parsons said: “He told police he had only done what he had done because he wanted his meds.”

Brown admitted two counts of burglary and asked for five other burglary offences between May 12 and 27 this year to be taken into consideration.

Last November he was given a hospital order in Doncaster and will now return to his current address of St Mary’s Hospital on Floyd Drive.

Judge Thomas Teague said Brown had suffered a serious brain injury two years ago, which had impaired his cognitive abilities.

He said: “You have lots of convictions for burglaries and other matters, in fact you are subject to the three strikes rule – the minimum sentence of three years subject to your previous convictions.

“But it is clear that you have a long-standing history of psychological and personality problems.”
