WAYNE Rooney scored an own goal after breaking down on the M62 in Birchwood after filling up with the wrong fuel.

The Manchester United and England ace broke down between junctions nine and 10 of the M62 after filling up his wife Coleen's car with unleaded petrol instead of diesel.

It is thought the couple were travelling back to their Manchester home from Liverpool on Monday evening when the footballer filled up with the wrong fuel at Burtonwood Services.

The couple, in the £90,000 customised Range Rover Sport V8, had to be helped off the hard shoulder as the 4x4 broke down. Highways Agency patrol officers assisted them as they waited to be towed away.

It is thought the work to repair the damage done to the car could run into thousands of pounds.

A spokesman confirmed there was an incident between junctions nine and 10 at 5pm on Monday involving a silver Range Rover involving using the wrong fuel.
