Andrew makes a special delivery

WHEN Andrew Wright got a call to say his wife Emma was going into labour, he didn’t expect that less than half an hour later he would be delivering his own child.

But thanks to a lot of help from neighbours and a woman in an ambulance control centre, that is exactly what happened.

Mr Wright, aged 33, was at work in Liverpool when he got a call from home on August 19 from Emma, aged 29, saying she had gone into labour with their third child.

He was back at his Great Sankey home within 12 minutes, but Emma was already giving birth and with the ambulance still minutes away he was talked through delivering his own baby, Bobby Leigh, by 999 operator, Heather Mitchell.

Andrew said: “I felt really calm while it was happening but as soon as he was born I was in bits, I think it was the shock of it all.

“Only afterwards did I think about what could have happened.

“But I want to make people aware of how fantastic and professional people like Heather are.

“If it had not been for her, I would have had no idea about what to do.

“This is something they do every day, but they should get recognition for it. She talked me through the delivery, asked me what we were calling the baby and then went on to speak to someone else.

But the drama didn’t end once Bobby Leigh had been delivered.

Bobby wasn’t breathing properly so neighbour Glenis had to step in to help clear his airways.

“Everyone was so helpful,” said Andrew.

The Wright family, of Marina Avenue, are now planning to visit the ambulance call centre in Liverpool to offer personal thanks to Heather and introduce her to baby Bobby Leigh.

And Andrew says the latest addition to the Wright clan will join brothers Jack, aged five this month, and Lewis, aged two, in his attempts for a five-a-side football team.

“I am an Everton fan and we are almost there now!” he said.
