A DRUNKEN thug may face prison after he admitted punching a man in Bridge Street and stamping on his glasses in an unprovoked attack.
Brian Gormley, aged 25, of Alder Lane, Burtonwood, admitted assaulting Daniel Bagshaw on Saturday, July 19, this year.
Gormley, wearing an England football shirt at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, struck around 3.50pm when his victim was walking home from work.
Alison Warburton, representing Gormley, said the defendant was walking towards Mr Bagshaw directly in his path.
Mr Bagshaw noticed Gormley ‘seemed to be unsteady on his feet’ and tried to get out of his way.
But the yob punched Mr Bagshaw twice to the eye, causing his glasses to fall to the ground, before stamping on his spectacles and punching him a further two or three times to the head and face.
Gormley ran off down Bridge Street towards Bridge Foot.
However, when Mr Bagshaw went to Warrington Police Station to report the crime he saw Gormley again. He identified him to police officers and Gormley was arrested 10 days later.
Mr Bagshaw suffered bruising to his right eye and head and needed to buy new glasses at a cost of £119.
The defendant admitted drinking 10 cans of lager with his friends earlier that day and said he was drunk.
He claimed two men that he had been with had told him to carry out the attack and said they had intimidated him. He apologised for the attack.
Gormley, who fidgeted and shook throughout court proceedings, has 14 previous convictions for 40 offences. His last conviction was in April, when he received 20 weeks in prison in relation to two police assault matters.
The case has been adjourned until September 16 for a pre-sentence report.
