THE locations of checkpoints, where drinkers will be scanned by metal detectors before being allowed into town centre bars on Saturday night, have been revealed.

The joint operation between police and PubWatch members is one of many initiatives police and licensees are embracing in a bid to make the town centre safer.

Revellers will be barred from pubs unless they have their hands stamped to show they have been scanned for weapons at the checkpoints where they will be given the opportunity to speak with a police officer.

Inspector Richard Reeves, of Warrington Town Centre NPU, said: Although we are have not had any weapon arrests for a while, what we are trying to do is set the standards for people coming into the town to see we are here and working with the licensees.”

The three checkpoints will each be manned from 10pm to 3am with a police sergeant and 10 officers equipped with metal wands similar to those used for airport security.

They will be located: l On Friars Gate by the side of Wetherspoons l By the pedestrianised area in between Rylands Street and Bridge Street l On Bridge Street by Big Bar A fourth checkpoint will be set up by Synergy, which will be monitored by the nightclub staff with police supervision.

Insp Reeves added: “People keep saying they want to feel safer and want us to do something, so we are.”

sounds like a good idea for a change but they need to change the colour and shape of the stamp every night or have some sort of random rotation system otherwise people alwys find a way to forge there stamp

This is a brilliant move forward. Is this going to stop people from fighting though?

this was an absoloute disgrace on saturday nite! are these police stupid, all it did was give people chance to hide any weapons / drugs sumwhere, get the police stamp and go and collect there stash! not only that but it caused concern of all bar owners who lost money because of this, does anyone have a name of the inspector and an email address so i can contact them about this? another thing just to show that the police and council have no idea about policing in warrington is the fact that they have agreed to close bridge street to traffic on fri, sat & and sunday nights? why sunday? its the quietest night of the week! it should be tue, fri and sat. and even the guardian are to blame due to the fact that when the article was printed on thursday in the guardian, the two pictures that were above the article were of academy way, which will still be open!

I agree with Pioneer1 to a degree, once you had the stamp you were free to walk around town unhindered and even go further a field, WA1 and Club Wired etc, if the mood takes you.

Back to the fact of walking freely, even if you did not go back for weapons/drugs etc, which I'm sure most people would not. Bags were not searched or wallets, you simply held them aloft and away from your person.

The next issue comes with, no matter how many checks they do, people can and will do damage with fists and feet. This follows on to make shift weapons and the like, every drink I had on Saturday was served in a glass or glass bottle, what is to stop anyone from forming these in to weapons.

If anything the police checks just distracted the 10+ police officers from forming any type of effective stance and presence.

There are plenty of issues to address with this system, also, like how come it only crops up at random times?
