MOTORISTS will be banned from lower Bridge Street at weekend evenings as part of a tough anti-social behaviour crackdown in the town centre.

But the closure decision was tainted when half of the councillors sitting on Warrington Borough Council’s traffic committee refused to vote.

The plans were approved two to one in favour as councillors Jill Bolton, Les Hoyle and Bill Brinksman abstained from the vote that has left taxi drivers angry.

Under the proposals taxi drivers would also be banned from using the taxi ranks during Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 9pm until 5am.

At a tense traffic committee meeting last Thursday around 50 taxi drivers voiced their objections saying that the closure was a threat to their livelihoods.

Under the scheme taxi ranks would be moved to other locations around the town centre.

Mr Hussain, a taxi driver, said: “For us as taxi drivers our main point of business is Bridge Street. To block off Bridge Street would take away massive revenue.

“It’s a gamble with someone’s salary. You could say if we moved these ranks business could still be the same but we could say the ranks have been there for 30 years, let’s try it bit by bit and move them to an adequate location.”

But Cheshire Police believes that the move will help them police the area better.

Inspector Richard Reeves, from the town centre neighbourhood policing unit, said: “We would be able to remove some of the resource from the lower Bridge Street area and they would be able to operate in that area more safely. The aim is to make the area safer and the only possible action is to remove the vehicles.”

Councillors were shown CCTV footage of the area around Bridge Street, which included drunken people walking out into the road in front of traffic and overflowing taxi ranks causing police and ambulance vehicles to struggle to get through.

Drivers and business owners including Paul Bond, the owner of Darli Bar, complained that they had not been properly consulted over the plans.

They even put forward ideas like using barriers to stop people walking in the street and making the road a one-way system for those times.

Despite not voting on the matter Clr Jill Bolton said: “I personally have not heard any convincing arguments as to why we are not trying something a little more modest like a one-way system.

“These taxi drivers are experienced in driving in these conditions and I am sure they drive very safely.”

An application for the road closure will now be made by the council to bring in the measures in the next few months.

Instead of closing the road to taxi's to "manage crowds" why dont the police try shutting down a few pubs/clubs? Making sure that only non-drunks are allowed access - how many people know that it is illegal to sell a drink to someone already considered drunk? Or that a police officer is the only person eligible to state the someone is drunk? How about making sure only over 18's or 21's are REALLY allowed in. Or I know, how about parents taking responsibility for their kids undeer-age drinking - dunno if that will help :S

as a hackney cab driver who has worked this town for over 20 years i know quite a bit about the trouble in bridge street.
this is a well established rank and has been for over thirty years yes on occasion there has been some over ranking but due to the current situation with everybodys money being tight not as many people are out on both nights {friday & saturday}so cabs will over rank as we are all trying to earn aliving when it`s busy the cabs are constantly picking up and moving off.
the problems are caused by the council and the police they are the one`s responsible for giving the licence`s out and the planning permission for pubs and take aways and putting them all in the one place.
and if they think by stopping taxis and cars from using brige street is going to stop the drunks or the fights or by having table and chairs outside the pubs is going to make people behave they must be stupid.
the streets are supposed to alcahol free zone witch all the cabs have been promoting for the last 3 or more years they carry a sticker in all cabs stating this and the council put signs up at tax payers expence all around the town does this mean that this no longer applies because table and chairs are placed outside.
there are laws to stop people wandering out on to the roads in front of traffic called (jay walking) why dont the police use this law is it because it would cause them to much paper work.
also the councillors who have made there decisions about closing the road and moving the ranks are the arse holes who are in bed at 10.00pm at night dont even go out in the town center at night unless they have a police escort.
i could rant for ever over this as it makes my blood boil.

this is another example of retarded council and police cheifs! can somebody please tell me who decided to close bridge street to traffic on a sunday night? the cabbie above will back me wen i say the council dont even realize what the busiest nightare, they should know that it should be blocked on a tue, fri and sat, not a sunday! and again the guardian have failed because the second camera shot above is of academy way, which would still be open, and to even more traffic / people if bridge street was to close! useless police! and also a good point about the drinking in the street, will this be allowed? will the road be modified in anyway, because if mot, there is only room for 53 and macaulys to have seating outside. the council shold also make it one way perminantly and widen the footpaths. what does any1 else think?
