CONTROVERSIAL plans for a new takeaway in Fearnhead have been thrown out by councillors.

Hundreds of protestors packed Warrington Town Hall on Thursday night to object to the scheme for a takeaway to open in a row of shops on Orchard Street.

But councillors were so opposed to the plans that they rejected them before any of the complaints were heard.

John Groves, development services manager, told the packed council chamber that members of the development control committee could turn down the plans without debate because similar applications for the site had already been lodged and turned down.

While no plans had been submitted for the building currently under consideration, the two neighbouring properties had been subject to planning applications.

Mr Groves said an appeal was currently being heard against one of the decisions.
