Tailbacks on M6 after crash at junction 19

LARGE tailbacks have built up on the M6 at junction 19, Tabley, after a serious accident involving a lorry and a car.

It is not yet known how many people were injured in the crash, which happened at 10.50am on Sunday.

The carriageway has been closed to northbound traffic and vehicles are being diverted off the motorway.

Cheshire Police have said the road is expected to remain closed for about six hours while officers investigate.

Police closed the road and traffic was removed from the carriageway by being directed the wrong way up the junction 19 slip road.

Diversions are in place on the A556 to take motorists to the M56 and back on the M6 at the next junction.

But the crash has caused serious delays and police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

A Booth, M6 Southbound says...

We were travelling on the M6 Southbound leaving at J19 when queues built up as people looked across at the accident. We saw the lorry parked on the hard shoulder with some damage to the front, and then a fire engine parked up in front of a vehicle which was upside down. The firemen inside the fire engine cab looked in no rush at this time, which is what may have confirmed our worst fears, when we saw the vehicle upside down with a large sheet covering the ability to view inside. One of my passengers believes this is what happens when someone passes away at the scene. We hope he is wrong, but if not, our thoughts go out to the family and friends of those involved...

We were on our way back from the lake district and passed the scene at around 1.30pm. It had looked like the lorry and car had collided whilst either the car or lorry were changing lanes. The car ended upside down in the middle lane, whilst the lorry ended up about 100 yards further down the road, parked on the hard shoulder. Judging by the state of the car, and reaction of the emergency services, I would not be surprised to hear that the worst had happened. I hope that I am wrong, and all in the vehicles make a full recovery.

We came to a standstill on the Northbound M6 at 14.20, about 3 miles from Junction 19 and soon crawled for 45 minutes. We were warned that the M6 was unlikely to re-open before 17.30 and expected to take the congested diversion that was advised on the radio traffic announcements. When we were in sight of Junction we were held at a standstill for over 10 minutes but, at about 3.15, we moved forward at a steady pace passed the site of the accident by which time the only evidence of the tragic event was sand being blown off the surface of the carriageway by the wind. The moral of this story being that the re-opening time is a very cautious estimate, in this case, all of two and a quarter hours earlier than the time quoted by the authorities at the scene of the accident.
