Shoebox gifts for soldiers

CHURCHGOERS are being asked to fill shoeboxes with gifts for British soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The idea is the brainchild of Gerry Sankey and Diane Gibson, churchwardens at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rode Heath.

The initiative runs along the same lines as the Operation Christmas Child project.

People are invited to fill shoeboxes with items including toiletries, boiled sweets, paperback books and a personal letter of best wishes.

All Saints' Church, Scholar Green, and St Luke's Church, Mow Cop, are also taking part.

Shoeboxes can be filled for women or men, and they can be left at any of the three churches.

The aim is to hand over the boxes to the Army at the end of July, and for more details ring Diane on 01270-874281 or Gerry on 01270-874003.
