THE expenses bill for Warrington's 57 councillors could reach almost £700,000 next year if new plans are given the go ahead.

The elected members of Warrington Borough Council will be given a report on Monday at the annual council meeting from an independent panel recommending an increase of almost 10 per cent on the amount claimed last year.

Under the new figures, the council leader, Clr Ian Marks, would earn a little more than £25,000 a year, the deputy leader Clr Keith Bland around £23,000 and opposition leader Clr Terry O'Neill would pick up around £16,000.

Executive board members would enjoy hikes of £6,000 to take them to around £21,000.

The standard rate for councillors will be £6,614 - a 10 per cent drop from the current total.

Councillors do not have to claim the expenses allocated to them.

Sorry for my ignorance but I assume these are expense allowances and not salaries? Although I've been to a council planning meeting and they are so painful they deserve some financial reward!!

"how many people know who their local councillor is?."

Well those who actually bother to vote probably do - rather than those idle gits who can't be even bothered to do so but still whinge about those who get in by default.

As a penalty for the Westbrook lights fiasco which cost £700,000 they should all repay their expenses and cover the cost!

Perhaps the Warrington Guardian could publish details of these expense claims. It could make interesting reading. Its no use moaning about these figures when you have no idea whether they are justified or not.

its just a gravy train, hard to say no when everyone else is doing it. If you had the "right" to claim all sorts of allowances would you decline ? We should vote for someone who actually states they will try and clean up politics.
