Green church wins environment award

ECO-FRIENDLY Wesley Place Methodist Church has received an award for its efforts in helping care for the planet.

The Alsager church was given the Eco-Congregation Award to recognise its good practice in "environmental stewardship."

Independent assessors were impressed by the church's environmental agenda being seen as everyone's responsibility.

They also praised work done by members of the church to promote One World Week to schools and other Alsager churches.

The harvest festival highlights the use of locally-grown organic and fairly traded products.

In the last few months 20 mobile phones, 60 pairs of spectacles and more than 100 inkjet cartridges have been recycled.

In addition more than 300 batteries were taken to the local recycling centre, and the church is planting trees to absorb the carbon dioxide it produces.

Some 44 trees were planted in 2006 in the Mersey Forest, and 80 were planted in Palestine last year due to additional fundraising.

The church is hoping to have an external eco-audit to look at ways of further reducing its impact on the climate.
