A PARTIALLY blind 90-year-old woman was saved from a fire by her quick-thinking 80-year-old neighbour.
She had put a plastic electric kettle on a gas ring at her sheltered home in Runnymede Walk, William Street in Widnes.
Fortunately, a smoke alarm alerted the woman living next door.
Watch manager Keith Roberts said: "The plastic kettle melted then caught fire on the gas ring.
"Her 80-year-old neighbour extinguished the fire using damp towels.
"Always turn off cooker rings when not in use to prevent accidental ignition like this and check your appliances before you go to bed.
"Smoke alarms successfully alerted her neighbour. If you haven't already got one, call us to arrange a free fire home safety assessment."
