A QUICK-THINKING dad averted a disaster after someone put a lit firework through his letterbox on New Year's morning.
The 49-year-old was asleep upstairs with his wife and son in Whitehall Drive, Hartford, when the nightmare began at 4.45am.
Fortunately he acted extremely quickly and prevented what could have been a much more serious incident.
Cheshire Police spokesman
He was alerted by the sound of the letterbox opening and went down to investigate.
To his horror he saw the lit firework which was just exploding and a curtain on fire.
He managed to extinguish the fire before it took hold. The family, who do not wish to be identified, were left extremley shocked and shaken by the attack.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Fortunately he acted extremely quickly and prevented what could have been a much more serious incident.
"The perpetrators don't seem to have any care for life and we would urge members of the public to come forward and help us."
The spokesman said police did not think the family had been specifically targeted.
He said:"We have no reason to believe this was the case. We don't know the motive or circumstances.
"We only hope that given the fact it was New Year's morning there might have been some witnesses who were walking home and might have seen something."
Anyone who can help should ring DC Chris Dean on 01625 613258, or alternatively ring crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
