Baby blues - parents 'ripped off'

ANGRY parents-to-be say they have been ripped off' by a pram store that has shut up shop.

The shutters have come down on nursery superstore Peekaboo, of Haydock Street, off Lythgoes Lane.

And customers say they are yet to receive their orders and are out of pocket.

Paul and Patricia Dowd, of Kingswood, paid £350 on August 11 for a Silver Cross 3D Pram System after they were offered a 10 per cent discount for immediate payment.

Mr Dowd, aged 31, says he called into the shop with his wife, who is six-months pregnant, over the August bank holiday and was reassured that the delivery was on its way.

But Peekaboo has been closed since last Wednesday and there is confusion over whether the pram was even ordered.

The dad-to-be said: "They have blatantly just ripped us off. They have just taken people's money and run.

"My mother- and father-in-law paid, so we have lost their present and it will cost us £700 for a pram now."

A spokesman for Silver Cross said Peekaboo ordered a 3D pram at a trade fair in March and this could have been intended for the Dowd family.

Andy Stokes, of Fairfield, paid £405 up front on August 4 for a double Babystyle buggy after being offered the same deal.

But he says his complaints were fobbed off and his girlfriend Katie Phelps is expecting twins next week.

Katie said: "We've bought other stuff from Peek-a-boo and I thought they were nice. But it's £400 gone."

Sharon Albinson, aged 23, of Orford, paid £150 as a deposit on a double buggy.

She said: "This might not sound like a lot but it is to a single mother.

"She (the Peekaboo saleswoman) told me it wouldn't be closed for long but the shutters are down.

"I have been told I won't get my money back."

Owner Jane Campbell could not be contacted by phone or letter by the Guardian. Peek-a-boo's telephone message says they are closed.

But speaking to the Warrington Guardian after complaints in August, she blamed problems with suppliers and difficult' customers.

She said: "We do our best but unfortunately that is never good enough for some people."

Edwina Greenwood, of Warrington trading standards, said: "We have had a number of inquiries from people who have placed orders that have not been fulfilled.

"We have checked with Companies House to see if the company has gone into liquidation - which it hasn't yet. And because it was a limited company there is sometimes a delay on this.

"But this could be a long-term process.

"If people paid with a credit card and paid more than £100 then they can claim from the credit card company.

"We do advise people to seek the extra protection of a credit card rather than a debit card or cash."

My parents paid £350 for pram for our twins that are due soon back in May. The staff at the shop offered to store our pram for us until nearer my due date. So my pram is now sat in the shop, fully paid for. I've tried phoning, faxing, e-mailing and physically going to the shop with no joy. This is tantamount to theft - I have informed trading standards and hope this woman is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This is disgracful of this women, to know that her business is in financial trouble and to stand there and take money of these people who save hard and want the best possible start for there babies is totally unforgivable. I have purchased items from peekaboo for my sister-in-law a good few years ago and was pleased with the service and was going to use them again as she is pregnant at present, but my heart really goes out to these people who have made purchases and received nothing. In this day in age there should be something someone can do with regards to this, but it like everything else this women will still have her fancy house and car and life and these poor people have to pay for her greed.

I'm expecting twins in the next couple of months and paid £600 in full after being offered the up front payment discount. I have just sat and cried when turning the page of the Guardian. I have been ringing and e mailing Peek a Boo for the last 2 weeks with no joy and suspected something was wrong. On Wednesday 5th (last week)I drove round to Peek a boo and found the owner Jane pulling down the shutters. Jane told me to stop worrying and that she had switched the answerphone on as they were busy and short staffed. When I questioned her closing the shutters before lunch time on a Wednesday she said they had decided to close on wednesdays and she had just called in to collect something. Jane then said I should not worry in my condition and that she would ring me next day with an update. As she drove off in her expensive 4 x 4 car I wondered how she would ring me when she didn' ask my name. Jane, you are a brave woman crossing all us hormonal women I feel sorry for your staff who I believe knew nothing about your bad management. Well done for spoiling what should be peoples happiest times of their lives. Shame on you for the lies.

I ordered my silvercross pram & car seat last september and was assured that it would be here on time to bring baby home from hospital beginning of January. They also advised that they would store it for me safely until the baby was here. I did not get the pram until three weeks after my baby was born after endless chasing with phone calls and emails. They gave me an old ugly car seat to bring my baby out of hospital as the seat had not arrived. I constantly rang on a daily basis to chase where the pram and car seat was and was told it was in transit. How can it be in transit for so long? I asked for my money back and for Jane to ring me but I never once had a email or call from her. I eventually received the chassis but no pram base, therefore still could not take my baby out. After endless phone calls etc regarding the situation and no reasonable explanation other than its it transit we said we would report her to the papers and she advised us that she would do us for slander. As we did not know the legal situation we did not say anything. When we eventually picked up the pram she offered us 20% discount off the next car seat but we told her that we would never hand over money to her again.

When we eventually picked up the pram she offered us 20% discount off the next car seat but we told her that we would never hand over money to her again.

we are expecting our 1st child due date 14/09/2007 first heard about the shop from my mother as she had just read the news article and rang to tell us the news but my mother was unaware that we had ordered our pram from peek-a-boo at a cost of £400 ,my wife is so upset that a product that was paid in full will no doubt not be arriving for it's intended use .How can this so called respectable women of 15 years of trading sleep at night knowing that she has ripped off so many people ,no wonder she was wanting everybody to pay in full with offering a discount if you did .this women should be chased down by the police and never ever be allowed to run a business again.

We ordered a Loola pushchair, car seat and accessories from Peek a Boo on 10 June at a cost of £430.00. We too were offered 10% discount if we paid in full, which we did! We were told the pram would be in the shop around the beginning of August but heard nothing. After chasing up, ringing the shop and calling in on a number of occasions we were eventually told it was expected to be delivered around 5th September. We called again to find the shutters down and alarm bells started to ring. My husband noticed the To Let sign on the building and rang the Agents who informed us Peek a Boo had gone into liquidation! I am devastated as I am now 39 weeks pregnant. They must have known this was going to happen and yet they didn't forewarn anyone and now alternative arrangements have to be made at such a late stage. Does this woman not care about the stress caused to pregnant women?!!

Just an update from previous comment..I would like to THANK Jane Campbell cos while she is swanning around in her 4 wheel drive vehicle my gorgeous granddaughter (who was born 5 oclock this morning)wont have her 4 wheel vehicle cos the callous "businesswoman"term used losely"..has shut up shop with the pram which was paid for in full was being held at the shop till our precious arrival was born. So Jane drive around with glee and think of all the anxious parents and grandparents who are running around for another pram/carseat so their children can get home safely... Oh and hope you sleep well at night after robbing innocent little bundles of their 4 wheel drives!!!Thought the quote "suffer little children to come unto me" was from the bible but perhaps if Jane opens another shop she might want to use it as a slogan cos in my eyes it seems quiet apt!!!

I am so angry that my sister has been let down by this company. My sister is due to give birth next week and she is so upset as she feels she has been conned! She too was offered discount for paying cash upfront and now she has lost almost £500. We are now ringing around to try and find another pram that will be ready to collect next week. My sister does not need this added stress and this situation has ruined this happy time in our lives. I hope the owner of this company feels guilty for all the upset she has caused. It sounds as though she can just walk away from this but I will explore every avenue to get my sisters money back.

I could not believe my eyes yesterday when i read about Peek a Boo!! We ordered our pram in July and were told it would be available to pick up by the end of September. I had no reason as yet to believe i would not be getting the pram until i read it and i just felt so let down. My mother was actually buying it as a present and paid by credit card so she will hopefully get the full £430 back. Other people have not been so lucky and it is absolutely disgusting to think that all those people have been conned by this woman! How dare she take our money, she MUST have known she would be unable to provide us with the goods at the end of it! She has not even had the decency to reply to emails or answer queries, yet she drives around in her top of the range 4x4 with not a care in the world! I hope she can sleep at night.

I ordered a loola pushchair, carrycot and car seat on 17th July 2007. I was offered 10% off if a paid for the goods in full that day. I paid £449.99. I was informed that the items should arrive in store at the beginning of August. Middle of August I had not heard from the store and so contacted them by phone. I was told the supplier had the pushchair and carrycot ready to be dispatched but was still waiting for the car seat and that it would all be dispatched at the same time by beginning of September. I have tried to contact the store since 3rd September to understand when I would receive my goods, there has been no answer and no contact has been made with me at all. I am due to have a caesarean next wednesday, wednesday 19th september, due to the fact that my baby is breech. i have no car seat to bring my baby home in and have lost all my money. i am absolutly disgusted. i have saved hard to afford time off work to be with my baby and now having to go out and spend all this money again will shorten my maternity leave. I am so upset and angry and feel this deceipt has tainted what is suppossed to be one of the most exciting times of my life.

I am expecting my first child on Sun 16th September. All pregnancies are filled with worry and anxiety about your pregnancy and your baby and this has only added to it
I ordered my pushchair back in July. As I am a single parent and money was quite tight my mum helped out and gave me the £300 deposit, leaving £278 balance and I was told to await delivery of my pram within 4-6 weeks.
As the due date got closer I worried that I hadn’t heard from the store, so i called and was ensured everything was fine just a delay.
Then last Monday I went to the shop to see what was going on. The shutters were down but I didn’t panic as it was lunchtime so decided to call later. then when i saw the article on thursday i was devestated and reduced to tears. I cant believe it!!!
I hope this woman is happy with herself knowingly taking money from people with no intentions of providing goods!! I hope she is proud of herself for causing so much pain to many parents-to-be!

We have been fortunate enough to be contacted by the owner of the property that PeekaBoo rented this morning. He had managed to marry up my earlier post on this site with the stock in the shop and the receipt book. He was at the property this morning and is trying desparately to contact as many people as possible via this forum. He obviously has nothing to do with this Jane woman or Peekaboo...he's just trying to help people out. He and his wife have really restored our faith in human nature. Hopefully, more of you out there can have your issues resolved as we have thanks to his kind heartedness. Many, many thanks

I also have the names and addresses of all 3 registered directors of PeekaBoo as per the post above. Jane Campbell and her partner (another director) only reside very locally in Warrington so, as per the above post, I will be happy, nay ecstatic, to share this information with all your disgruntled customers should you not pull your finger out and start helping people out. It will be harder to ignore people when they're camped outside your front door Ms. Campbell

I am the eldest daughter of Jane Campbell - 1 of 3 the youngest is only 7 years old - and between myself and my 12 year old sister we have to take it in turn to make sure someone is present with my mum at all times as she is suicidal something that children of our age should not have to do - my mum is not a criminal nor is she even a nasty person in fact she doesn't know what she is anymore - she is not bothered about the business that she has owned for 18years that has been her lively hood i mean this by no exaggeration as i myself would only know - all she cares about is the customers of whom she has let down and yes she has taken money to pay the prams that these customers wanted - my mum is not denying that neither is she ignoring it or fleeing the country like most criminals that people are calling her - my mum is my mum and we don’t have a nice car and the home well it wont be ours anymore i have to pay for food for the family because my mum has none and if she did then we wouldn’t come first the customers and employees would and people who know my mum would know this - but the business is not hers anymore as it has been taken off of her and she has nothing to give any customers who’s money she cant retrieve back!! my younger sister asked me today if there was anyway that she could help, if there is any money that she can give my little brother 'is £11 enough?' - I come home today after work and my sister squeezes me tight 'she hasn’t stopped crying all day' - if I was a customer i would be thinking good so she should and they have every right to think that- but as for the people/ customers who would like to come to our home please ask the gentleman who has already been here before to threaten my family ask him for our address I will stand at the door with my mum and she and I - although I have no part in the business will apologise at what has happened and the business through no decision of my mothers was declared 'closed' bankrupt' liquidized' whichever way you would like to say it - but please she has nothing to give worth any money she does not have anything that belongs to her but us and so please stop threatening her and us and please know that we do all of us say how sorry we are but can you please leave out my brother and sister. And stop the phone calls and the threats at least. please please.

What a load of B******* the above comment is from the daughter how would she like to be in the position we are all in now!!! Her "WONDERFUL" mum shouldnt have taken hard earned cash off people knowing the situation she was in cos believe me being declared bankrupt doesnt happen overnight!!! She is suicidal well sorry if I dont feel sympathy she only has herself to blame and she deserves to suffer like we are suffering cos we have to pay twice for a pram when she drives round in 4 wheel drive vehicle!!! but that isnt a nice car according to her daughter well its certainly nicer that the soapbox some kids will have thanks to her greed!!! By the way it wasnt a treat I will defo post her address or sit outside the shop and give it to all the upset parents cos she should face people or is she too chicken!!! She is SCUM !!!!

This woman has knowingly duped people out of their hard earned money and in at least one case has blantantly lied to the face of these customer that she apparently thinks so highly of. As a mother herlsef, she should be more than aware what a stressful time pregancy is. I doubt she's feeling as bad as the woman who delivered her baby this morning and has no pram and is down £650.
No-one deserves to be threatened and I understand the concern you show for your mother but it will do little to placate those people who have lost money and peace of mind

I find it truly unbelievable that you are looking for any sympathy at all, I don't care how old you are. 'My mum is not a criminal' - I'm sorry, but this is exactly what she is , she has stolen from people and will be prosecuted as such. This callous woman has left many many people high and dry with no more money to replace essential items that they have already paid for. And apparently not the first time? How people like this are allowed to carry on trading despite previous business failures is beyond me. To all the poor people that have lost out, I truly hope this woman is made to pay for what she has done.

A lot of us are first time parents so how can Jane's daughter expect us to react..... certainly not with sympathy i hope!!! I understand your mother has gotten herself into a mess but how do you think we all feel??!!? £430 for a pram is a lot to pay all in one go (thanks to your mothers so called 10% off offer - which might i add she had no right to offer seeing as we would never receive our goods) and it is not like thats the only equipment a baby needs. We have had to find the money for all the other essentials as well as another £400+
to replace the pram!!!! It is disgusting.

I cannot thank the owners of the building enough they contacted ourselves last night and we have equiptment and a pram that we can now bring our 1st child home from hospital in. They are 2 of the kindness and most wonderful people you would ever want to meet. They have restored my faith in kindness and are just genuine people who want the best for these unborn babies who Jane has knowlingly stolen from as my pram paid in full back in may had not even been ordered.I just once again want to thank these owners and express my sincere gratituide for their overwhelming kindness i can never repay you both enough.

Hi, just reading the last message. So glad some of this mess is being cleared up!
If anybody (ie the owners of the property or staff) knows anything about an ICandy Cherry pram (colour was fudge) which was ordered 4th August along with a foot muff, bag and Maxi Cosi cabriofix car seat (in black reflection), can they please contact me on my email address..... ellen_higham@hotmail
.co.uk.
Or if anybody knows who i can contact to find anything out???

We paid £431.07 (including the 10% discount)and the order was due to be collected although we hadn't yet heard anything (obviously).
I am not counting on the fact that it is in the shop but it's worth a try!
I will be so grateful for any information.

I paid for my pram back in October, my Baby was due in March. I was being induced due to health problems and i phoned the shop asking for my pram to be derived early. They told me it would be a couple of weeks. 6 weeks passed and i had my baby, the staff at peek-a-boo told me that the reason my pram was delayed was because there was a problem with the fabric. After my baby was born i called the manufacture who assured me this was not true and there was a problem with the account! After speaking to the director at the manufacturers I was very luck and they shipped out my pram. Peek-a-boo then claimed they had sorted out the problem. I have since taken back the hood for the car seat as it was faulty and they said they would send it back to the manufacturer to be fixed. Which never happened. I now don’t know where the hood is but I would be grateful if anyone who worked there or has access to the building would let me knows where the hood is.

I know this is not a major problem, unlike those new parents who have not received they goods they have paid for, I hope you get your situations sorted out like I did

I know this is not a major problem, unlike those new parents who have not received they goods they have paid for, I hope you get your situations sorted out like I did

I now donÂ’t know where the hood is but I would be grateful if anyone who worked there or has access to the building would let me knows where the hood is.

I am utterly digusted with the owner at peek a boo. To carry on taking money off people when she knew she was goin to close,
is an absolute outrage! Me and my husband had left an £80 deposit on the Icandy Cherry pram, which we thankfully
paid for on credit card, and may be able to get back. Other customers who have paid by credit card should check as they may be able to recoup their money. We feel now lucky that we didnt pay in full by cash (as we were going to) and smpathise fully with those that did.We were lucky enough to find the same pram we wanted from a shop in runcorn. Having a baby is very expensive and being ripped off by these sharks does not help matters!

To anybody who ordered an icandy pram, i emailed icandy yesterday and they have told me no orders have been made for Peek-a-Boo! So basically Jane has totally deceived us in taking out money and that's fraud in my book because the goods we paid for were not even ordered.

Just like to say a HUGE Thanks to Billy and Debbie the owners of the unit where "Jane the thief" had a so called business. They contacted my son Simon and we managed to get the bedroom furniture which we had paid a large deposit on unfortunately we didnt get our pram which was £600 and paid for in full as Silver Cross had collected all the stock as Jane hadnt paid them either but at least we didnt lose out totally. They are two of the most genuine, honest and likeable people you could ever wish to meet. They are trying their very best for the people who were robbed by Jane and they themselves have been robbed by her cos they are losing money for the rental of the property but their main concern is helping the people who have lost out so Billy and Debbie once again THANKS for all you have done, you have proved there are still some "good guys" out there and all the best for the future.

I would just like to thank the owner of Peek-a-boo for giving me so much stress today, when I am due to give birth in 3 weeks. My Mum paid for a Silver Cross Sleep Over in June for us at a total of £508. I wonder where that money went, obviously not to silver cross!! We have tried ringing constantly and e:mailing during this week and when we got no answer today, we went to Warrington to find your unit closed up with the name signs scattered over the floor. How do you think that feels when your expecting your first baby in October?? Would you like that to happen to your daughter?? Didn't think so. We ended up going from Warrington, into Liverpool City Centre, Aintree and then finally ordered the pram in Wigan. Just what you want to be doing at 37 weeks pregnant!! A message to the staff at Peek-a-boo, none of this is directed at you and hope you find a decent employer to work for in the future! To the owner, enjoy your big car and just keep thinking of all the people you've ripped off at a very special time in their lives while you're driving it!!

An answer would be appreciated, seeing as you didn't even bother to contact my husband and my self to say you were closing?? What did you spend it on?? Yor big car or some of your mortgage for your big house??

Many thanks to Clare at Winstanleys Pram World in Pemberton, we went there on Saturday and i managed to order my icandy cherry pram and all the accessories. It is even being delivered this week free of charge. Clare was really helpful and everything was so easy. Just annoyed now we didn't go there in the first place, it is a gem of a shop!!!

I found an amazing deal on a silvercross travel system with a free car seat like the one I had ordered at The Baby in cheshire.the colour salsa pattern I had ordered is no longer available but they had 8 others so if you are you still waiting for yours its a good place to try and replace what we have all lostas it has the whole silver cross range in stock and delivered it all to me for free which is someething.

i know this is absolutely no use to all of those poor parents and parents-to-be who have lost money but we had problems with peek-a-boo earlier this year. at the end of december 2006 we bought 2 car seats for our twins who were due in april this year and after much consideration we decided to take the seats and store them at our house despite peek-a-boos offer to store them for us after we had paid in full. my mum then ordered a twin buggy in early january and paid in full - yes she was given a discount for doing so -(delivery date asap). i phoned the shop 2 weeks before my section date and was told that it would be delivered soon, one week before i was told the same and one day before i was told that they were chasing it, along with seat liners that i had ordered and paid for in february. anyway after many many phone calls we got the buggy delivered and many more phone calls and visits to the shop with screaming babies we eventually got the seat liners. i belive that if it hadn't have been for my persistance i would not have received the items paid for, but now it all makes sense. i feel so sorry for all those people who have lost money and am wondering (like many people) what happened to all those £400+ payments taken by the shop where orders were obviously not placed and paid for??

i know this is absolutely no use to all of those poor parents and parents-to-be who have lost money but we had problems with peek-a-boo earlier this year. at the end of december 2006 we bought 2 car seats for our twins who were due in april this year and after much consideration we decided to take the seats and store them at our house despite peek-a-boos offer to store them for us after we had paid in full. my mum then ordered a twin buggy in early january and paid in full - yes she was given a discount for doing so -(delivery date asap). i phoned the shop 2 weeks before my section date and was told that it would be delivered soon, one week before i was told the same and one day before i was told that they were chasing it, along with seat liners that i had ordered and paid for in february. anyway after many many phone calls we got the buggy delivered and many more phone calls and visits to the shop with screaming babies we eventually got the seat liners. i belive that if it hadn't have been for my persistance i would not have received the items paid for, but now it all makes sense. i feel so sorry for all those people who have lost money and am wondering (like many people) what happened to all those £400+ payments taken by the shop where orders were obviously not placed and paid for??
