A MAN has been detained after Academy Way was blocked off by police due to a bomb threat.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and a public order offence today, Wednesday, after police were called to the scene at 11.20am.

This follows reports of a man acting suspiciously near to DW Sports Fitness gym and Warrington Market.

According to one witness a man reportedly threatened to detonate a bomb.

A second witness, who has asked to remain anonymous, recalled seeing a man get out of a car.

He threw himself onto the floor before shouting that he had a bomb. 

Officers remain at the scene near to where the car has been left abandoned with the doors open but the road has now been reopened.

It is understood the police dog unit has been called to the scene.

A police spokesman said: "At 11.20am on January 18 police were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously on Academy Way in Warrington.

"Officers are at the scene and the road is currently closed as a precaution while they speak with the man. 

"Officers are also checking a nearby vehicle."
