FEARS over the 'damaging' cost implications of fly-tipping have been highlighted after an industrial bin full of waste was dumped in Sankey Bridges.

Residents raised concerns after spotting the mess on the Trans Pennine Trail, between Barnard Street and Forrest Way, yesterday, Wednesday.

The majority of it is wood, with the council set to carry out an inspection to search for clues.

A spokesman said: "Any report of fly-tipping is passed to our enforcement team, who carry out investigations within five working days.

"Any fly-tipped waste on council land is removed within 20 working days.

"We welcome all information received from the public so we can tackle those who irresponsibly dump their waste in the community."

Cllr Tony Higgins, executive board member for leisure, community and culture, has raised concerns after becoming aware of the latest incident.

He said: "These clean-up operations are not only damaging to communities but they are also costing the communities hard-earned money.

"It means we can't spend the money on valuable services in need. This has big implications for our residents."
