PLANNING chiefs have refused an application by Stockton Heath restaurant Ego to construct a retractable roof following a huge response to the proposals.

The development control committee was advised to approve the plans at a meeting on Wednesday but some councillors argued the application looked more like an extension than an awning.

A number of residents and the Parish Council opposed the application but the council received 147 letter of support for the plans and a petition backing the restaurant’s proposals.

Costello's Bar is next door to Ego and owner, Mr Costello, objected to the plans at the meeting.

He said: “It’s intrusive, will cause loss of light and will ruin the view for customers. It looks ugly.

“It’s a full extension, it’s not an awning.”

The planning documents show that a raised decking area 100mm high would also be installed outside the restaurant with a low wall of planters.

Cllr Peter Walker (Stockton Heath – LD), speaking on behalf of the Parish Council, said he was concerned about the impact of the retractable roof on the ‘site scene’ of the village.

But Cllr Peter Carey (Fairfield and Howley – LAB) said: “I personally think it’s an enhancement. I don’t think it would have a detrimental effect.

“In this day and age people expect to be able to sit outside, especially if they have children with them or a dog.”

However Cllr Bob Barr said the proposals amounted to an extension because the structure would be permanent.

Eight councillors voted to refuse planning permission while two councillors voted against refusing the plans.
