THE son of Eric Hughes, who was killed during the Hillsborough disaster, spoke of his heartbreak at not being able to buy his dad a pint.

David Hughes said his dad was his hero during the inquest into the deaths of 96 football fans and 99 per cent of his memories with him were Liverpool-related.

The 42-year-old, of Barmouth Close, Callands, died when David was 17-years-old.

During an emotional statement, David said he had lost the opportunity to develop his relationship with his dad, who was born in Liverpool, and could never meet his fiancee or four beautiful grandchildren.

The court heard Eric had turned down a trial at Tranmere Rovers as it clashed with a Liverpool game and wanted to call his first child after Liverpool hero Emlyn Hughes.

The lorry and taxi driver was described as a ‘helpful man who would do anything to help anybody’.

David added: “I loved my dad so much.

“I idolised him and my life and going to the match will never be the same again.”
