AN engineering giant based in Warrington says Birchwood will be the base for some 300 new jobs to be created by the company.

Amec, which has major offices at Birchwood Park, has revealed it will be creating the jobs in the nuclear arm of its business.

It aims to bring in a wide range of disciplines, including safety consultants, project managers and mechanical and electrical engineers, a number of which will be based at the company’s Birchwood laboratories.

David Mowat, Warrington South MP has been a long term advocate of the benefit of nuclear power.

He said: ““There are more than 3,000 jobs in Warrington which rely on the nuclear industry.

“It is great to hear there will soon be 300 more and I hope and expect this is one of a number of similar announcements which will take place now we have finally decided to go ahead with nuclear new build in this country.”

Clive White, president of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe business, said: “This reflects the growth of our nuclear business, not only in the UK but across the wider Europe.

“We have already created around 250 jobs across the business so far this year and are planning to increase those numbers by a further 300 in the months to come.

“AMEC is the leading nuclear services company in the UK, serving both the UK and international market. Our ambition is to retain and extend this leading position in the UK and continue to grow to become the leading nuclear services business across Europe.

“Our business has expanded significantly in recent years and if we are to continue to give our customers the world-class service they have come to expect from us, then we need to significantly add to our already exceptional range of skilled people.”

The jobs will be based at head office in Knutsford and the state-of-the-art labs at Birchwood, which are the largest commercial nuclear laboratories in the UK.

Mr White added that AMEC will be targeting key recruitment events and more information is available at amec.com/careers.
