FIRE chiefs are investigating the cause of a devastating barn fire in Winwick.
Firefighters battled the blaze for more than 24 hours after flames broke out at rush hour.
But investigations are still going on to find out why it happened.
The alarm was raised on Thursday at 4.45pm as the fire started at Leigh's Animal Feed Store, off Hollins Lane, near to Hollins Park Hospital.
Six crews attempted to douse the flames as part of the single-storey half brick, half steel building collapsed after the fire was described as already ‘well alight’.
Residents were told to keep away from the area because of the possible toxic nature of the fire.
A Cheshire Fire spokesman said firefighters worked through the night to fight the fire and were still dampening down on Good Friday morning.
Crews eventually left the incident at 8.25pm on Good Friday.
A Cheshire Fire spokesman added the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
