THIS is the brutal attack on a swan by two dogs in Sankey Valley Park captured on film by a shocked bystander.

People watched in horror as the female swan, which had been sitting on her eggs, was repeatedly mauled by what is believed to be a pitbull and a Staffordshire bull terrier.

A fisherman was among those who tried to separate the animals from the bird. But RSPCA officers could not save the swan due to its horrific wing and neck injuries.

David Ashton, aged 39, of Woolston, was fishing with a friend when the pitbull-type dog pounced on the swan at around 5.30pm on Friday.

He said: "A white pitbull and a brown Staffy were off their leads and the white dog went straight for the nest.

"He grabbed the female swan and started ragging it but the swan managed to get away and the dogs and their owner carried on walking.

"But about half-an-hour later they came back. The dogs were still off their leads and the pitbull went straight for the nest again."

The swan managed to free itself and made a desperate bid for safety in the canal only to be followed by the white dog.

Mr Ashton said: "She managed to get back on her nest but the dog dragged her out of the reeds and on to the footpath where the brown dog also started attacking it.

"The dog took no notice of its owner. It was well out of control."

The owner, who has not been identified, did make attempts to call his dogs off and was seen to jump in the river to try to separate the white dog from the swan, which is a protected species.

The swans and their eggs, of which only two remained out of seven, had created great interest among visitors and had sparked calls from Whittle Hall councillors for the restoration of resident rangers in an effort to protect the nest, which was in a vulnerable position on the canal bank.

Dr Alex Symonds, aged 56, from Callands had gone with his wife to visit the swans and also witnessed the attack, capturing the horrific scene on film.

He said: "It could have been a child. We are all so upset about this and want to see the owner prosecuted."

An RSPCA spokesman said: "This was a very sad incident which must have caused great suffering to the swan involved, and the RSPCA would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or knows anything about the dogs allegedly involved." The RSPCA can be contacted on 0300 1234 999 in confidence.

Police are investigating.

THis sounds like a sensible solution but wouldn't it be more sesnible to neuter the dog's owner instead? Do we really want brainless idiots like this reproducing???
It really would be more sensible to neuter the brainless idiots (as they are the problem not the dogs). Although the amount of brainless idiots we have in this country I am not sure the already overworked NHS could cope.

Surely every breed of dog is capable of being dangerous as is a swan.I think peoples perception of this type of dog is led by the media highlighting attacks. What happened was horrendous and worse when you realise that swans mate for life. I have a rare breed of dog which means many peole approach it as if it were a toy. I ALWAYS keep her on a lead when children are around as I feel I have a duty to make them feel relaxed around a dog.Owning a dog and taking it to training by a professional has certainly taught me things never even thought of before. As with most things in life read the instructions before use

Can I also ask why it is murder when a dog does it but not a cat?

Please put this story into context, not every-one who owns "dangerous breeds of dogs" (as every-one likes to call them )are chav berks. This man clearly has no respect for ANY-ONE or ANY-THING. Its his lack of control over his OWN dogs which has lead to an innocent swan and eggs to be destroyed. All the moaning and **** is not going to change what has happened,so hopefully poeple can learn from this horrible attack.Lets try to show alittle curtsey to all onwers of all breeds. This shouldnt be allowed to happen again. LIKE I SAID BEFORE "BRING THE RANGERS BACK". I CERTAINLY WOULD VOLUNTEER TO HELP.

After seeing this week’s front story of the brutal attack on the female swan, and reading the people's comments I feel I need to say more on the matter to yourselves and not just posting my opinion on the comment page. My husband and I live next to Sankey Vally in Waterways we have three young children 12, 6 and 2 plus we are also VERY PROUD ONWERS OF ONE BEAUTIFUL MALE BRINGLE STAFFORDSHIRE BULL named Cj. I happened to be in the park on that sad day around 4.00pm walking home from school with my two daughters. That idiot was in the park then and yes his two dogs were both off the lead and even at this time they ran straight to the swan's nest in the reeds. I also like to say the owner was no where near to supervise or restrain his dogs they were left unattended for agood 5 mins. Owner too busy chatting to some-one. The reason why I remember this is because my youngest daughter kept on saying "Cj dog Cj".
I would like to point out at this point that yes the white dog may possible of been a pit bull but the other one was NOT a Staffordshire bull. It was a cross breed of sorts. Its head was the wrong shape, it had longer legs and a fatter body. My family are responsible and loving owners of our dog. Our dog is a family pet and is brilliant with our children and others who come to play. However when walking Cj he is ALWAYS kept on a lead in the park because of the wildlife, children and other dogs, also this is just good common curtsey towards other people. We all have the right to enjoy the park but I feel some dog owners (mostly the older generation) have a strong opinion on how as they put it "dangerous dogs" should be controlled. 9 times out of ten when we are in the park their dogs are off the lead. It is always their dog who comes over to ours, we have to politely ask the owner to call their dog or restrain them. When we do usually they say "oh the dog is friendly, his alright", but when we say "yes that’s all very well but our dog isn’t keen on yours" the owner on most occasions Tuts or moans. I have had countless arguments with other dog owners, when asking them to call their dogs or put them on the lead until we go pass. All these owners that I have seen their dog might not be a dangerous breed yet they still pose a threat to my children, me and Cj being off the lead. It should be one rule for all or not at all. I feel people also make comments on certain topics in this case breeds of dogs without doing they research first. I have been stopped a few times since this incident, and I do feel on edge every time I walk Cj now. You just know that people are pointing staring even shaking their heads in disgust. Please spare a thought for the nice dogs out there. Just like people there are horrible ones but also good one. It’s very sad that only bad press ever gets written about these dogs. I feel you should report both sides of this so called dangerous dog. Come to ours any-time see for yourselves. Meet Cj. From Marie Donno. In relation to my previous e-mail I would like to add, May-be Warrington council should reinstate rangers back to patrol and look after the park .Not only are dogs a treat but teenagers, only last week my husband witness a group of lads throwing stones at the swans. Should all "teenagers" be listened or put down like as I keep saying so called "dangerous dogs".
