Update - A COUPLE who survived when a car smashed into their Timperley newsagents, have thanked the emergency services who came to their aid.

Gary Woods and his fiancee Jackie Smith are recovering from their ordeal and are determined to rebuild their wrecked Constables shop.

The couple were in the Park Road shop when the Vauxhall Tigra careered into it, shortly before 9am last Thursday morning.

Shop assistant Jane Cummins, who works at the Deli Bakery across the road, said she heard an explosion that sounded like a bomb going off.

The impact brought the shop front crashing down on Jackie, trapping her and the woman car driver, who is in her mid 20s.

Also in the shop at the time were shop assistant Jean and a customer. Gary, Jean and the customer escaped through the shop's back door, but Jackie, aged 41, and the driver were trapped.

Shortly before the crash the shop had been packed with school children on their way to nearby Heyes Lane Primary School.

There were fears the building - at the junction with Heyes Lane - could collapse and so firefighters brought in specialist shoring equipment to support it.

Firefighters from a specialist search and rescue team were called in and brought the women to safety.

Jackie escaped with a cut to her face and cuts and bruises to her legs. She was discharged from hospital after treatment.

The car driver also escaped serious injury. She suffered shock and a head injury and was still being treated in hospital on Tuesday.

Station Commander Ian Holt, from the fire service, said: "When you look at that building , they are very lucky."

Gary Woods said: "It is one of those experiences that you have once in a lifetime.

"The emergency services - the firefighters, ambulance crews and police - were fantastic. They were just amazing on the day.

"We were amazed by the way they acted and their professionalism."

Two off-duty firefighters were the first on the scene and they gave first aid to the women before fire crews from Sale and Altrincham arrived.

Jackie's mother, Marjorie Smith, said: "I would like to thank everyone involved the in the rescue of my daughter from the rubble of Constables - especially Paul, the off-duty firefighter who remained with her throughout.

"You all did a wonderful job in dangerous conditions for which we all will be forever grateful."

Gary and Jackie's newsagents business is already up and running again, with newspaper deliveries resumed.

Shop assistant at Deli Bakery, Jane Cummins, said of the crash: "It was like a bomb going off - that is what I thought had happened."

Last year there was another close escape when a young cyclist was injured when a car hit railings in front of the shop.

I was shocked to she the state of Constables. I was in the shop with my baby the day before the accident. I wish everyone all the best and hope to see you, and use Constables again, hopefully not too long in the future. My thoughts are with you.

I was very shocked when I found out what had happened to Constables our local Newsagents. I wish Jackie and Jean a swift recovery. A lot of hard work was put into the Business by the owners and their staff. I would love see the shop back again and running soon. True it has been a local landmark. A happy future to you all. Would like to say thank you to everyone who helped the firemen police etc

To The Messenger. How about starting a campaign of support to have this Timperley iconic landmark rebuilt. I know it is upto the present owners what they would like to do with the building but I am sure if lots of people pledged their support to Constables it would not only encourage them to re-open but would help to get over the shock of the even. So how about it? Save our Constables Campaign. You can add my name and family to the list for starters!!!
Get well soon and lets see you back in business as soon as possible.

It is so sad to see Constables demolished. Best wishes to Jackie and all involved with the shop. Constables is a landmark which has been there all my life and have fond memories from my childhood. I remember old when old Mr. Constable had it back in the sixties. I would love to see it rebuilt and have the same name. As for the junction being an accident black spot. It has been the way it is for years and years and it doesnt need some knee jerk reaction by some councillor to change it. The amount of accidents there over my lifetime have been minimal. Leave well alone and spend the money on Timperley's crumbling roads instead. G Penson Timperley

How on earth does somebody manage to drive a car into a shop like that? For a fairly small car it must have been going silly speeds to do that. And for that to happen just before 9am when its busy with kids etc is a joke. Luckily there was no human cost, but what if some kids were stood on that corner waiting to cross? It doesnt bear thinking about.

As a local customer of Constables, and Garys best ever paperboy :P I wish Gary, Jackie and Jean a speedy recovery in any injury or shock sustained. It was heartbreaking to see a shop I'm so fond of like every other Timperley resident be demolished the way it was. I sincerely hope the business will be back up and running in the future, and will be dropping a bottle of wine to Gary and Jackie very soon.

Good luck to Gary, Jackie and Jean in recovering from the shock and any injuries sustained at the time. Constables has always been (as said before) a landmark in timperley and a lovely pace to buy the odd item and lottery ticket (it is/was a very lucky place to get lotto tickets from!)
Best of Luck!

bold This is so sad. I feel so sorry for the people who own this shop, especially the lady who got trapped underneath the car. She is so nice and the shop is brilliant and convenient. It is sad to see it go, and it was worse to see it being demolished as I went past. It has been there for so long, it will be missed so much. bold

Best wishes to Gary, Jackie & Jean - don't let this kill off Constables - it's been a Timperley landmark for the 40 years I've lived here. When I was a child we used to use it as a reference point when giving directions - everyone one knew & loved Constables!

Typical councillor- brings politics and speed into the story from the start.

How about ' thankfully no one was hurt- can I thank the off duty fireman, the normal firemen and women, police, and ambulance for carrying out a fantastic job in very dangerous circumstances'

Get off the speed issue.. and give the people who voted you in what they want.

Whilst you were there councillor - did you ask the emergency services what they also thought about speed bumps?
Or how about the injured with their potential back aches if they would like to go over speed bumps?

Anyway - I hope the injured are not too bad - best wishes all and hopefully the shop can be reborn!!
