Captain Jack's a busy man

IT had already been a hell of a week for Captain Jack just two days into BBC1's five-day Torchwood special, Children of Earth.

On Monday he had a bomb implanted into his stomach and duly exploded, destroying the Torchwood base in the process.

On Tuesday the various bits of his body regenerated into a screaming bloody skeleton, before his more recognisable form was encased in concrete by the Government baddies.

As if that wasn't enough, the concrete block was then smashed into a quarry by his paramour, Ianto, in order to free him.

One suspects the prospect of aliens arriving on the planet on Wednesday night was going to be a piece of cake for him.

On the evidence of the first two episodes, this sci-fi spectacular was delivering in terms of expecting its audience to just go along with the most bizarre happenings. I mean every child on earth stopping still for a minute? Pull the other leg!

Over on Channel 4 the new Charlie Brooker quiz programme You Have Been Watching made its debut on Tuesday.

Among the jaw-dropping elements was footage from an American series that pits various warriors through the ages against each other in a fight to the death.

It took tasteless programming to a new low, especially when the Taliban and the IRA fought it out in a car park.

As for Charlie's quiz, it was a case of great presenter, shame about the guests.
