THERE may be some real freaks of nature filling our screens with the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent (ITV1) this week.
But if you want to see some creatures that will really keep you entertained, look no further than the magnificent Springwatch (BBC2).
The new series started on Monday without the ebullient Bill Oddie, but it already feels as though his substitute, Chris Packham, is going to be adequate in the role.
No-one could quite match Oddie's mischievous sense of humour - a vital counterbalance to Kate Humble's jolly hockey sticks enthusiasm - but at least Packham is a seasoned TV pro.
The other newcomer to the show, Martin Hughes-Games, has apparently moved from behind the camera, and it shows!
Tossing his shoulder-length curls and grinning inanely, Mr H-G needs to calm down, or the wildlife will decide it can't cope with him and Kate and will debunk to the next county.
And, of course, the assembled cast of birds, badgers, foxes and all manner of other creatures, are the real stars of Springwatch. As the series goes on, characters emerge and storylines develop that both entertain and educate on a nightly basis.
Nature in the raw and the chance to relax and let the rural scenery and fascinating footage soothe the spirit after the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Can Simon Cowell compete with that?
