SO the loveboat chugged out of Weatherfield without ageing Lothario Ken in one of Corrie's most hilarious storylines for years (ITV1, Monday).

The pompous pensioner chose Deirdre's straining neck muscles over Martha's dramatic pauses at the very last minute, despite having packed his case and joined the actress on the canal for a bowl of soup and a glass of wine before fleeing from his marital responsibilities.

One minute he was untying the rope to allow the canalboat to sail off - and the next he was standing on a bridge with his case, as Martha turned around from steering the craft to see why he wasn't answering her. Quick mover for someone of his age!

I think it was probably the sight of Eccles' sad eyes as he was leaving the house that was the deciding factor. That and the canalboat's chemical toilet.

Over recent months Ken has been undergoing a much delayed midlife crisis, walking around with a sweater tied around his shoulders, bemoaning the fact that he never became an award-winning novelist and looking down his nose at Deirdre the pleb.

Things could be worse, Ken. You could have made Tracy's best friend pregnant at 14 and be lying in a hospital bed after a stroke, with the realisation that dopey Julie is your daughter. Be thankful for small mercies.
