PERHAPS spending more than an hour and a half in rush hour Manchester United traffic wasn't the best way to gear up for an evening out.

But that was the reality I faced as I rushed to find my seat in the Lowry Theatre literally seconds before the opening act. It became clear that the high profile performance would have to pull off something spectacular to sooth my ailing disposition.

Luckily, the Chinese State Circus was in the business for miracles and the show was nothing short of astonishing throughout.

Forget maltreated lions and scary clowns, this theatrical circus flaunted an effortless charm and grace as the audience was offered an explanation as to where each act originated from in this ancient tradition.

With a performing culture dating back more than 2,000 years, it was also an honour to watch the Chinese State Circus in its Lowry debut.

One fearless feat was deftly performed after another and the taut tension of each act was met with gasps and applause, which made for an electric atmosphere.

A clear highlight was the Shaolin Wu-Shu Warriors who moved and fought in flawless choreographed perfection putting most martial arts films to shame. The contortionist, big banner juggling and slack wire stunts also beggared belief among many others.

A clear audience favourite was the hoop diving segment, which saw acrobats somersaulting through a rotating ring more than six-feet in the air.

Ultimately, the Chinese State Circus was an amazing and thoroughly satisfying spectacle of pure professionalism and sterling entertainment.
