TO some he is the voice of reason over the EU and immigration, while to others he is perceived as a refugee from a 1970s sitcom.

But, wherever you stand politically, Nigel Farage and UKIP grabbed the attention of voters – often for the wrong reasons – during the 2015 General Election.

Now a theatre company has decided to take a satirical swipe at the right-wing party that kept the Tories on their toes in the form of a musical.

Among the team of 12 actors at Hell Bent Theatre Company putting on UKIP! The Musical is former St Gregory's RC High School pupil Lisa Lynn.

The 27-year-old said: "It’s all based on things the party have actually said and done and we’re just trying to highlight it through comedy.

"Sometimes it will make you cringe, sometimes it will make you laugh but either way it will make you think about it.

"More than three million people voted for UKIP so it’s something we need to talk about."

The musical sees Nigel Farage scratching his head over how to rescue Britain from Europe's 'clutches'.

But after a visit from the ghosts of Britain's past – Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher – he suddenly sees a way to win over the public.

Cue Union Jack flag waving and song and dance numbers like Let's Pull Up The Drawbridge and Bongo Bongo Land.

"We do Bongo Bongo Land set in a political nightclub called the Gay Banana and it’s a full on singing, dancing number," added Lisa, who went to Priestley College.

"We’ve had people saying for days later they were humming the songs and singing the lyrics and then realising they probably shouldn’t out of context.

"It’s not to be insulting, it’s to highlight the issue. These are things they’ve said like women who don’t clean behind their fridges are sluts.

"We support each other because with satire you know it’s a joke but you do still feel a bit nervous about some of the lines."

UKIP! The Musical had its sell-out debut show in London last month at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art Festival.

Lisa, who plays 'Britannia' in one of Nigel's nightmare scenes and various members of the public, said: "There’s not enough satire in the West End at the moment.

"With the exception of the Book of Mormon there’s really nothing and especially in terms of British satire which is something we have always prided ourselves in."

But now the production needs your help because a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to take the musical to the Edinburgh Festival.

So far more than £4,000 has been pledged towards the £10,000 goal on Kickstarter with a week to go.

Lisa, whose mum Lynn was a special constable for Warrington police and whose dad Stephen is a site manager at St Wilfrid's CE Primary School, added: "Huge thank you to everyone who’s backed us.

"There are 12 actors in the show. For some of us this is our first time going to Edinburgh and we really believe in the show.

"We’ve given our time and spent money going to rehearsals so it’s really nice to see the support of friends, family and even complete strangers.

"Funding has been cut so brutally so it is a real struggle, particularly for theatre, to get anything up on its feet."

Lisa was in a 100-strong choir at St Gregory's and took part in the folk group, dance club, drama club and all the productions.

She was also part of the Warrington Youth Choir and sang for Princess Margaret at the opening of the Peace Centre in 2000. Her dream is to be the lead actor for a production on Broadway.

Lisa, who is also part of the cast for Shaun of the Dead Live, said: "Getting up and making other people laugh and smile is what I've always enjoyed the most.

"I remember at primary school we did a display that said: ‘When I’m older I want to be...’ "Everyone had a doctor or a fireman but mine was in the shape of a pint of beer and said when I grow up I want to sing in a pub.

"My grandma and granddad used to take me to working men’s clubs in Blackpool every weekend.

"At first I didn’t realise you could get paid for doing that, I thought it was just for fun.

"And then when I found out you could do whole shows and acting and singing as well I thought this is the dream."
