A GROUP of rowers has raised more than £5,000 following what could be the last in a unique race.

The Warrington Rowing Club team raised the money during the annual Jersey to France race. The crew, David Holes, Graeme MacLean, Wally Bury, Mark Erlam and Sian Henrys rowed 19 miles of the Channel despite French resistance and were welcomed into the harbour by a thousand-strong well-wishers and a flotilla of more than 50 boats. It could be the last event as the French say there are health and safety risks.

Three of the crew have only been rowing since January. They delivered £1,500 to the club to buy a boat for an eights crew.

They also raised more than £4,000 for the charity Kabuki.

Hannah Scales, of Lymm, was girl with a rare genetic condition called Kabuki Syndrome.

When she died in 2000, a research grant was set up in her name.
