KARATE: Club’s national medal winners

NORTH West Karate Academy achieved medal success at the English Karate Federation National Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.

The senior men's team in kata (patterned moves), made up of Luke Scott, Alex Hodge and Paul Charlton, struck gold, as did Lydia Coleman in the girls' 10 to 11 years kumite (fighting) competition.

Club newcomer Matthew Ayres claimed silver in the boys' 10 to 11 years kumite.

Scott added to his gold with a bronze in the 18 to 20 years kumite, while Coleman collected bronzes in the girls' 10 to 11 years kata as well as in the girls' 10 to 15 years team kumite and team kata along with Samantha Anderton and Danielle Sawer.

Anderton also enjoyed individual success with a bronze medal in the girls' 12 to 13 years kumite, while individual bronzes were also awarded to Nicole Halsall in girls' 16 to 17 years kumite and Natalie Charlton in 14 to 15 years kata.

There were two bronze medals for newcomer Beth Scott, one in the girls' eight to nine years kata and the other in the girls' 11 to 15 years team kata with Stephanie Bateman and Rebecca Duff.

The boys' 11 to 15 years team kata trio of Ben Osborne, James Oxley and John Charlton also returned from the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre with bronze.
