A MAJOR policing operation is underway in Trafford in anticipation of huge crowds ahead of the Manchester United vs Roma Champions League football match.

Match commander for the fixture, Superintendent John Graves, said: "Last week's first leg in Rome passed off largely peacefully and we would like to thank the supporters of both teams for making it a memorable occasion for the right reasons."

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is now prepared for the return leg at Old Trafford tonight (Wednesday April 9).

Supt Graves added: "It promises to be another great football match at Old Trafford. This is an exciting fixture where the winner will have the chance to compete in this year's Champions League semi-final.

"We expect a capacity crowd and a large number of people will travel to Manchester to watch the match.

"Large numbers are expected in Trafford, Salford and the city centre. People without tickets are advised to stay at home and enjoy the match with their family and friends."

Police presence in the city centre and around the stadium will be increased to provide public reassurance and minimise disorder and fans are advised to arrive early.

The operation for this game will ensure the match is held with minimal disruption so people can have a safe, enjoyable time there.

Police confirmed they have liaised closely with both clubs in the run up to the game.

Supt Graves said: "Both clubs are extremely responsible organisations, and I am confident that they know that we all carry a responsibility to ensure the game passes off peacefully.

"I hope the match will be an enjoyable event for everyone who attends and that a carnival atmosphere will be created by the genuine supporters, which will demonstrate all that is good about the game in the United Kingdom. Europe's eyes will be on Old Trafford once again and our objective is to ensure that the event is memorable for all the right reasons."
