Patient at centre of care battle dies
Rod Johnson
Rod Johnson

A PATIENT at the centre of a row over the NHS' refusal to pay for his care has died.

Rod Johnson suffered two strokes in four days and died at Leighton Hospital yesterday, Thursday.

His brother Stephen has been fighting to get the health service to fund the 55 year old's treatment in Redwalls nursing home in Sandiway.

Stephen, of Strawberry Lane, Acton Bridge, said: "I am just so angry.

"I will fight on in memory of Rod."

It was the second tragedy to hit his brother Stephen in the past few weeks as his mother Brenda has also died.

Under the current system, the NHS will meet all costs of long term care if it is deemed to be for medical reasons.

If it is considered social care, as Rod's was, the costs are means tested with the patient expected to pay for some or all of their care costs.

It's absolutely ridiculous that a man as ill as Rod was refused funding. PCTs are interpreting the rules to suit themselves. Of course Rod was entitled to funding, having had a series of strokes two years ago he was left bedridden and he clearly had health needs and not social care needs.

Stephen will win his case for restitution of nursing home fees, there is no doubt about that.

Enormous credit to him for continuing to think of others and using Rod's case to highlight this disgusting NHS inequality at a time when he could be forgiven for wanting to step back from the fray and take some time out for himself.

You're a star mate.
