Under-strength Vics forced to switch to defence
UNDER-STRENGTH Biddulph Vics enjoyed mixed fortunes over Easter against two of the league's top sides.
The Vics were beaten 1-0 at Tunstall Road on Monday by fourth-placed Rocester after a 1-0 victory on Saturday at fifth-placed Causeway.
The Vics' managers had only 12 players to choose from for Saturday's match, and one less for the visit of Rocester.
As a result they adopted a defensive formation, with Shaun Mould the lone striker on Saturday and Ashley Lawton up front on Monday.
Vics' chairman Terry Greer said Causeway should have had a penalty in the first half, and the Vics had a goal disallowed for offside.
The Vics scored the winner on 53 minutes, Michael White being played through by Matt Platt, and taking the ball round the keeper to score.
Mould wasted a good chance, and set up Platt, who put his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.
The Vics spent most of Monday's match defending, with Lawton playing his first game for 10 weeks.
Rocester scored on 62 minutes, Dave Shaw, their leading scorer, firing home from the edge of the box.
Vics' keeper Danny Reid saved well from Shaw in the first half, and Lawton and Platt had efforts cleared off the line.
"Saturday's match was spoiled by the weather, and it was bitterly cold, with snow and wind, which made it diffficult for both sides," said Mr Greer.
The Vics are 10th in the table, and travel to ninth-placed Stratford Town this Saturday.
They are at home to mid-table Studley next Tuesday
