Wolves reap benefit from 2007 woes
Paul Cullen shows his delight after the final hooter at Castleford
Paul Cullen shows his delight after the final hooter at Castleford

PAUL Cullen believes the problems Wolves went through during 2007 are starting to stand them in good stead.

Various obstacles - most notably a crippling injury crisis - hit Wolves hard last year as they missed out on the Super League play-offs.

But the experience of such adversity came in handy when Wolves lost Stuart Reardon and Lee Briers to injury as well as Vinnie Anderson to the sin bin midway through Monday's 34-31 win at Castleford.

"It was very pleasing on Monday to take on so many adversities that get thrown up in any game of rugby league and to be able to manage them," said Cullen.

"Twenty minutes in, 12-0 in front and in complete and utter control, then we lose three players in 60 seconds. If they're your full back, your scrum half and your stand off it takes a little bit of reorganisation to be able to manage the rest of the game and I think we've done that quite adequately.

"It was a win for being able to manage difficulties that are thrown at you.

"The character was very evident with the way we've gone about our business without a recognised full back, scrum half and stand off.

"Vinnie Anderson and Jon Clarke made a very decent fist of trying to manage the team down the field and the defence of our line.

"You've got to commend all 34 players for doubling up and putting their bodies on the line in such a short space of time. But that's Easter.

"You never quite know when you come out Friday what you've got left for Monday and anomalies do happen.

"We were very pleased with the way we reorganised and restructured, and very pleased with the way the guys have defended to protect our position when in the lead.

"Hopefully all the adversity we went through last year paid dividends for us on Monday."
