Bands sought for Alsager music fest
HEAVY metal fan Helen Harrison is hoping a summer festival will be music to the ears of young and old.
Helen is a Police Community Support Officer, and is organising a series of music concerts in Milton Park, Alsager.
The concerts are due to take place on three consecutive Friday evenings in August, and are aimed at local teenagers.
The free concerts will run from 6pm to 9pm, and feature a different three bands each night..
The festival is aimed at providing something for Alsager's young people during the summer, and helping to promote a positive image of teenagers.
Milton Park was plagued last summer by rowdy youths, and police confiscated a large amount of alcohol from the youngsters.
The summer music festival has been given an overwhelming thumbs-up by pupils at Alsager School, who took part in a survey about the event.
Helen, aged 24, a fan of German heavy metal band Rammstein, is now seeking the support of local bands and the Alsager community to turn her ideas into reality.
She wants to hear from groups interested in peforming, and anyone who has a stage and PA system.
"Last summer we had large groups of youths, in some cases as many as 60, gathering in Milton Park causing noise and disruption," said Helen.
"The worst nights were Fridays, and we confiscated a large amount of alcohol and broke up a number of fights."
In a bid to avoid a repetition of the problems Helen was asked by Inspector Mark Gammage to organise a community event for the town's teenagers.
"We came up with the idea of a music project, at which young people would perform with their friends," said Helen.
"About 80 per cent of the pupils at Alsager School who took part in a survey said they would come to the event.
"I want the young people of Alsager to come and really enjoy themselves, and I would like to see parents coming along with the younger children.
"The vast majority of teenagers are really nice kids, and it's only a small number who cause problems."
The festival is due to take place on August 8, 15 and 22, and no alcohol will be allowed in the park.
It will end at 9pm to avoid disturbing people living nearby, and bands wishing to perform or anyone who can offer a stage or PA is asked to ring 0845-458-6382 and leave their details.
