TESCO is looking to create a mezzanine level at its Congleton store as part of major expansion plans.

The plans would increase the gross floor area of the store by 70 per cent, and the new areas could be open by mid 2009.

The creation of the mezzanine level would require the roof level to be raised by one metre.

Shoppers would reach the new floor via "travellators" from the ground floor of the Barn Road supermarket.

The mezzanine level would offer CDs, books and greetings cards, school, home and office stationery, everyday clothing and a wider choice of household and kitchen equipment.

Planning permission is being sought by Tesco for ground and mezzanine floor extensions to the sales and storage/servicing areas.

Approval for the ground floor part of the scheme was granted by Congleton Borough Council in October, but has yet to be implemented.

As a result Tesco is now seeking approval for the whole of the scheme, at ground floor and mezzanine level.

Documents supporting the plans said the mezzanine level would provide the opportunity to improve the store by offering a more comprehensive range of convenience goods at ground floor level.

This would allow the mezzanine level to be used for a complementary range of non-food goods and services.

Tesco is also looking to instal a 10-metre high wind turbine in the store's car park.

The renewable energy from the turbine would be fed directly into the store to reduce its use of conventionally-produced electricity.
