TWO speed cameras in the same road were set on fire in just two days.

The cameras, in Speke Road, Widnes, were targeted on Monday and Tuesday at about 11pm.

One was pulled down - allegedly using a car and chain - and ignited, while the other from was wrapped in tyres and lit.

Liam Murphy, manager of the Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership, said: "It is a very disappointing situation. Speed cameras are there for a very good reason and it seems quite an odd thing to do.

"Cameras slow down traffic to reduce the risk of accidents and play an important part of road safety. Why anyone would want to stop that is beyond me."

About one camera is targeted each year in Cheshire.

And Mr Murphy said the police would do all they can to catch the offenders.

"We will study the film and bring these people to justice," he said.

"We will be putting new cameras in place and will consider mobile enforcement until the cameras are ready."
