Collapsed Altrincham man's car targeted by meter maid

A PARKING attendant sprang into action when a man collapsed outside Altrincham General Hospital - by trying to slap a ticket on the victim's car.

The diligent warden came upon the scene after the man, who is diabetic, had keeled over in a car outside the hospital entrance.

Nurses ran out to help the man after his driver had dashed into the hospital to ask for assistance, and an ambulance was called.

But the intrepid meter maid spotted that the driver had pulled up in an ambulance bay - and was not about to show any leeway.

Undeterred by the frantic activity going on around her, the parking attendant repeatedly tried to issue a parking ticket.

She ignored protests and explanations as she pressed on - and even continued to issue a ticket after the ambulance arrived and the paramedics took over the care of the patient, according to a shocked observer.

The witness, who does not want to be named, said: "She finally did not give a ticket - but it took two ambulance men and the driver to persuade her that this guy had collapsed.

"Was this the first pantomime of the season?

"Sadly no, it was just another day in the life of the public, the medics, the hospital and an apparently over zealous parking attendant.

"One has to wonder whether she was trying to meet a target - or whether she was completely devoid of common sense."

The incident highlighted renewed calls by the Voluntary Transport Group for dropping off zones to be provided for its drivers to use, when they take disabled passengers to Altrincham General.

Group organiser Kaye Gardner said although it did not involve one of her drivers, she was not surprised by the incident.

Her drivers had been issued with eight tickets over the years - with the latest one happening on November 14, although all but a couple were later rescinded Kaye said: "Over the past three years I have written several letters and made endless phone calls in a fruitless attempt to get Trafford Council to provide a dropping off zone for drivers wishing to deliver disabled people to Altrincham Hospital for treatment.

"Despite promises that they are 'looking into it' nothing has been done.

"Altrincham is the only hospital in the Manchester area that does not have this facility.

"With over zealous traffic wardens waiting to pounce and the disabled parking bays usually occupied by shoppers rather than patients, we are in danger of a situation where our drivers will no longer be prepared to take the risk of being fined."

I really can't see the problem with this. The current waiting list for coma-related parking permits in Altricham is only three months long. The gentleman need only have visited his local parking office when he originally planned the coma, applied for a visitors parking permit for the given day, produced Proof of Residency i.e. Council Tax Bill, Tenancy Agreement or Recent Utility Bill, had a blood sample taken, waited two weeks for the sample to be processed and returned, confirmed the addresses of his seven immedate anscestors, waited another week for confirmation, agreed to sacrifice his firstborn daughter to the many angled god, Kllxxixis and he could have passed out for two hours (no return within four hours) in any of the marked "medical emergency bays in the area of the hospital.

It's victim culture gone mad, and not the fault of the parking attendant. When will people take responsibility for their actions?

God, that meter maid should have been the one fined, not the diabetic coma guy.

I can believe this. My mum took my 92year grandad to Altrincham Hospital and there were no disabled spaces available. My grandfather was unable to walk from Regent Rd Car Park so my mum pulled up on the other side of the road opposite the entrance and left my 8 year niece in the car whilst my mum helped my 92yr old grandad across the road up the steps. In the meantime a parking warden came along and put a ticket on the car. My mum explained to the warden the situation and advised that he saw her take my grandad but this fell on deaf ears. We disputed the ticket to no avail. I hope an over zealous warden comes along to him one day whilst helping a disabled member of his family.

Just letting you know your story has made it all the way to New Zealand. It sounds like the parking wardens over there are extremely insensitive and stubborn.

Absolutely disgusting, where was this person's humanity. Trying to ticket in this situation should result in the attendant being sacked.

These low-life are just robotic parasites sent out by low-life at the local authority to basically steal from the public. We need a radical overhaul of the parking control system in this country (thank you Margaret Thatcher). How can we ever expect society to have respect for authority when these parasites behave like low-life parasitic scum.

Just be happy it was'nt in the US,or the man
would have been tazed, beaten, cuffed and stuffed, and charged with Disorderly Conduct
and Resisting Arrest. Then strip-searched and
left lying alone on the floor of a jail cell.
