BISHOP Jared Ireland says he forgives the arsonists who torched his Runcorn church - even though it will now have to be demolished.
"I personally don't hold any bad feelings about anyone," said Bishop Ireland, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Clifton Road.
My hope is that they will recognise what they have done and want to change
Bishop Jared Ireland
"I can forgive them, that's no problem.
"The Saviour taught when people do things wrong, they can always make up for it. My hope is that they will recognise what they have done and want to change."
Flames leapt through the tiles of the single-storey building when firefighters arrived, at 4am on Sunday.
Halton's community safety manager, Alan Briggs, who is leading the forensic investigation, said: "We were unable to stop the fire spreading from the annexe to the roof.
"It caught the eves of the gable end of the main building and spread through. There was a total collapse of both roofs within an hour.
"One of the reasons we couldn't fight the fire from inside was because of the risk of collapse.
"It's an absolute shame a place of worship has suffered this loss."
Five fire engines, a hydraulic platform and command and control unit were drafted in as firefighters fought to bring the inferno under control.
The 27-year-old church was closed for renovation and due to re-open in February.
The 140-strong congregation is meeting at The Heath conference centre.
"One thing that has touched me and many members is the outpouring of sympathy by many people who live in the area," said dad-of-five, Bishop Ireland, who remembers carrying tiles and bricks to help his dad and volunteers build the church.
"Although people are a bit sad and upset about it being burnt, I can see a lot of good coming out of it. I want to express my appreciation for the magnificent efforts of the fire crews.
"They were so helpful and understanding, I could not fault them."
Det Con Rob McLoughlin, said: "Our teams are carrying out an extensive forensic investigation. We are appealing for witnesses."
