ALMOST 70 per cent of North West councils have suffered a surge in cigarette litter on their streets since the smoking ban was introduced.

That's according to Keep Britain Tidy, which today revealed the amount of cigarette ends blighting our streets shot up by 43 per cent since the start of the ban.

Ginette Unsworth from Keep Britain Tidy said: "We always knew the smoking ban would have a negative affect on the state of our streets - but it's surprising just how much.

"It's vital businesses, authorities and individuals do what they can to stop the streets being littered with butts."

To beat the butt blight Keep Britain Tidy is launching a campaign next Monday, September 17, to encourage smokers to dispose of their cigarette rubbish responsibly - reminding them if they do not bin their butts they could be hit with an £80 fine.

Posters with a dropped cigarette end covered in camouflage print and using the strap line "however you disguise it, it's still litter" is one of three ads that will be appearing in bus shelters, bar toilets and phone boxes across the North West.

If we follow the route of American bans, there will be exclusion zones around public places,so the litter niusance will not be for long.
And,if as predicted,1000+ pubs close, thats a few more litter free aeas.

Well as the smoking ban closes pubs already hundreds are struggling and we havnt hit the winter yet i dont think this will be an ongoing problem as smokers choose to stay at home and drink and smoke in the warm.

As a Congleton resident, pub-goer and non-smoker I welcomed the ban with open arms. I still do, and I disagree that the smoking ban is closing pubs. If anything it's made them more accessible to non-smokers, as some of them were horrible places to be when they were busy due to the thick haze of smoke that filled the pub. I don't see any decline in customers - in fact there's a new one opening in Congleton soon, so quite the opposite.

From the beginning of 2008 all smokers will be required by law to carry their own personal ashtrays to alleviate the “big butt” problem. They must also carry a fire extinguisher about their person too in case a cigarette or lighter starts a serious fire.
From 2009 they will also be required to have “unclean” tattooed across their forehead and ring a bell whenever they are in public.
2010 will herald the roll out of the smoking SS who will have in their power the ability to shoot any smoker on sight. The government predict that by 2011 there will be no public smokers left in the UK.
2012 sees the government’s crackdown switch to people that laugh in public closely followed by anyone seen smiling.
They predict that 2015 will be the year that the first thought police are mobilised and by 2020 the UK will be declared the first country totally occupied by morons but on the plus side, all the morons will live an extra 10 years because of the smoking ban that started it all.
Now who knows how to goose step?

Webmaster, I agree with your scenario completely.
Though personally after reading threads in other places, I was more inclined to think that people were going to give up all pretense of debate and just accuse smokers of cursing their cattle.

Well, what did you expect? No access to ashtrays means littering. And please, please, before you demand that anyone put their butt in a bin: That's not safe! Remember that all sorts of rubbish are thrown in there, including paper, and a glowing cigarette butt can start a fire. So, put up ashtrays, or better yet, kick the ban - problem solved
