The members' clubroom building on the towpath at the end of the Hawthorn Road aqueduct - between Sale and Stretford - dates back to the seventeenth century.

The Orb was recorded moving from the ground upwards very quickly during an investigation, carried out at the request of club director David Fraser.

He explained: "I wrote to Paraquest to see if they could help, I suppose I got in touch with then out of curiosity really.

"They've told us about the video footage and were looking forward to seeing that - everybody at the club is fascinated to find out the results.

"I have been a member for a good nine years now and I've heard various spooky stories while there's been the odd time when I've experienced objects moving without explanation."

The boat club was founded in 1964 and has about 40 members who regularly use the Watch House.

David added: "It's a very atmospheric building and when you go upstairs sometimes you do get the odd shiver, it can certainly be very eerie.

"One member used to come down quite regularly with his daughters and they'd sometimes go off for a few minutes - when he asked where they'd been they told him they had been talking to the old lady upstairs.

"But the two rooms upstairs haven't been occupied for years and years and when we'd go and check there was never anybody up there."

Although the Watch House is on the bank of the canal it's believed the building, that was originally two cottages, was built before the canal was constructed.

It has had a chequered history with a variety of uses: it was once a coffin store and has also been a saddle manufacturers shop and stables for the horses that pulled the barges on the canal.

Do you think the Watch House is haunted or is there a more earthly explanation?
