RYAN Palin was an angel' now he is serving life in prison for his part in the brutal killing of a vulnerable man.

This week, his uncle, who once brought up the 15-year-old, blamed a terrible childhood, his wild mum and blunders by social services.

Lee Palin told the Warrington Guardian: "Ryan is not a monster he never was, it is just that his life has been made into a disaster.

"I'm not sympathetic to what he did to that poor man in fact, I'm heartbroken this is the decision he made.

"This must never happen again to any innocent victim like Mr Atherton or an innocent child so corrupted and violated."

Ryan, of Grasmere Avenue, Orford, along with Craig Dodd, aged 17, were jailed for life at Warrington Crown Court last week after they admitted beating David Atherton, aged 40, and dumping his blood stained body in the Mersey.

After his death, the pair boasted to friends of what they had done and took them to the spot, near Kingsway Bridge, where they had thrown the body.

Mr Palin, the only brother of Ryan's father, Scott, who died in 1993, decided to speak out in an attempt to prevent a similar tragedy happening again.

Mr Palin, a pilot living in Florida, added: "I want to make sure this never happens again and no other kids are pushed into the darkness like Ryan.

"He was an angel when he lived with us, so good. He is a product of his awful life and constant neglect from Warrington's social services.

"For more than a year, Ryan and his younger brother lived with my wife and I on a farm in Nottingham, they loved it.

"Their school grades were improving and they were lovely kids," added Mr Palin.

But that all changed, claims Mr Palin, when social services insisted the brothers go back to live with their mum, Debbie Green.

"Social services just washed their hands of those children, the judge called Ryan feral but it was his mother who made him like that.

"All Ryan needed was love and attention to stop this. There are too many children running wild in Warrington."

Now all Miss Green's children have been taken into care.

In court Ryan's barrister, Charles Chruszcz, said his mother had allowed her son, who was on the Child Protection Register, to be missing for days and never called the police.

While his sentence report said: "It is not the son who is inherently bad, it is the family circumstances, Miss Green's failures."

Mr Palin who has a five-year-old daughter and eight-month-old son added: "This case was worldwide news, just Google Ryan Palin and it's one of those people you'd meet in hell.

"If another potential victim like Ryan could be saved it would be a blessing."

John Dunkerley, head of service for children's social care and youth services at the council, said: "This has been a very sad and tragic case and our thoughts go to the families of the victims and those who committed the offence.

"The council has supported Ryan, and his extended family, for many years. During that time, a wide range of services were offered to Ryan. Unfortunately, they were clearly not sufficient in this case.

"While we understand that this can be a distressing time for all those involved, the council and partner agencies can only offer services and support. It is up to the individual to accept them.

"When the allegations against Ryan first came to light we immediately examined our procedures and our involvement in this case, as did all other agencies.

"Following those investigations, we believe we have a range of robust services in place which although sadly were ineffective in this case, are generally effective in supporting other children, young people and their families."

Why is it that social services will never accept responsibility for their complete lack of interest. They would rather push their noses around a troff where it isnt wanted than help children who need help! Its no use just blaming the boys mother alone, yes she is greatly responsible but surely as a government/taxpayer funded organisation i would say social services hold a great deal of responsibility. As a child let down by social services i can guarantee this child was 'un co-operative' sure he was, he was a teenager with an image to maintain, so why not give them incentives to take your 'help'!!!!! Isnt it funny how a charity such as NSPCC will move the earth to help yet Social Services neglect responsibility! Id say taxpayers fund NSPCC than that bunch of clowns.

I fail to see the correlation between being 'neglected' by the social services and beating a man to a pulp then throwing him in a river to drown. Theres lots of examples of people within the system where they go off the rails and shoplift etc, but there is no way a 15 year old doesnt know that killing someone so callously is totally wrong. Hes just another example of a brainless thug who would have done it regardless of his situation.

Social Services may shoulder some of the blame for this, due to the day and age of our society, but the ultimate blame is on the perpetrator. To be honest, I think the kid got off almost scot-free. How they can call it 'life' and then say he's eligible for parole in six years is beyond me! Life should be LIFE, full-stop. He took a life - and while I'll stop short of saying his life should be taken from him, it should be made as difficulat as possible. To free him after six years of 'intense training' such as the type he's likely to receive in prison is ludicrous and invites trouble in the future. He will be out, quite possibley, at 22 years of age ... still a kid, basically. I can unequivocally say that I'm glad I'm not raising children in today's society. God Help Us All when today's kids become parents of their own.

I know this family personally. I am no fan of social services but in this case I happen to know they gave as much support and more as could be expected, everything from holidays and adventure trips and constant support and intervention. The mother is the one who is feral. My ex-wife along with an elderly couple who lived across from them in Grasmere Avenue were forced to leave their homes due to their lives being made a misery by her and her family. The elderly couple had lived there for forty yearsprior to this happening. Tragically for some kids all the intervention in the world isnt enough but they should have taken them into care long ago, however, the mother is one of those who is a professional victim and plays the system.

There have been a lot of victims in this situation. The biggest victims of all rarely make the press ... they're the unfortunate family of the deceased - in this case, David Atherton, aged 40. To lose their son/brother/uncle etc., in a situation such as this, will forever affect ALL of their lives. Perhaps they weren't as close - on the surface - as what most families appear to be (again, on the surface) - but the fact is that they've suffered this tragic loss most of all.

I'd seen the victim around the local area ... and he was (in my opinion) as harmless as a fly.

If ONE child can turn his life around as a result of this, then perhaps Mr. Atherton's family can eventually find peace. I hope that many more than one child can learn from this. The long and short of it all is that the lad committed the crime and a person lost his life because of it. He should do more than six .... for cryin' out loud, you can get more than that for pilfering a cheque in The Untied (sic) States ...

The write up in the Warrington Guardian this week claims social services are not to be part blamed for the horrific murder of Mr Atherton. The front page headlines, are regarding one of the teenage brutal murders, RYAN PALIN THE VICTIM. There is only one tradgic victim who suffered beyond believe, and that is MR DAVID ATHERTON. Let down by the 'so called' organisations of help. even in his death, the justice system LET HIM DOWN! LIFE SHOULD MEAN LIFE. Someone please send the teenage PSYCHOPATHS to IRAQ BAGDAD, then the poor relatives of Mr atherton may get real justice, tradgically too late, and us innocent people will get peace of mind. totally sickend. My thoughts go to david and his family, the ONLY victims.

Council should of moved both familes far away they was well known to them - what the council forgot to note is that the past 4 places where dodd's family have lived they have been moved on every time - this is a disgrace to warrington how this could happen and i hope they never get out coz most people of warrington wouldnt want to see them -

Council should of moved both familes far away they was well known to them - what the council forgot to note is that the past 4 places where dodd's family have lived they have been moved on every time - this is a disgrace to warrington how this could happen and i hope they never get out coz most people of warrington wouldnt want to see them -

the warrington guardian did not print all of the people's names that caused mr atherton hurt in his life and it should have reading some of the other comments that other people have wrote i to think life means life and more should be done with those that were not mentioned because to them they have got away with it and possibly to do more crimes.
