ROWING: Quartet earn their pieces of silver in Eton race

WARRINGTON Rowing Club's boys' junior 16 quad sculls crew have bagged the silver medal at the National Junior Sculling Head in Eton.

Chris Johnstone, Tom Pearson, Mike Pownall and James Whitehead finished in second place and were only one second away from winning the race, which brought together 20 of the strongest crews from across the country.

The quartet - all year 11 students at Lymm High School - completed the 3.8km course in 13mins 0.06secs and only one-third of a boat length separated them from victory.

Warrington's girls' junior 18 quad sculls crew of Jenny Argent, Katy McQuillian, Olivia Oakes and Hannah Unsworth took fifth in their event, while Alison Bailey, Emily Clark, Rachel Harper, Frankie Sinnott and cox Andy Mair were 11th in the girls' junior 14 coxed quad sculls.

Josh Goswell, Darren Griffiths, Phil Lyons, Matthew Spence and cox Emma Dunbavand were 12th in the boys' junior 15 coxed quad sculls, with the girls' junior 15 coxed quad sculls crew of Bryony Ackroyd, Liv Clubley, Lottie Cooper, Jenni Pearson and cox Dunbavand finished 27th.
